At some point, every little kid asks for a pet. When you are choosing a pet, you need to consider the traits of the dog. Dachshunds are cute and adorable but you need to know if they will fit into your lifestyle.
Small Size Means Apartment Dog
The dachshund is famous for the "hot dog" shape and they are just too cute for words. They come in two sizes both regular and mini. In either case, they are small and will work well for apartments.
Stubborn but Smart
Anyone who has ever owned a weenie dog will tell you, they are smart and stubborn. Potty training can be an issue for some and many will have "excitement" accidents even after housebreaking. You can do some things to help prevent the excitement potty-ing if you take the time. It is more training you than it is training the dog.
One Person Dog but Likes Families
These cuties will develop a deep bond with one person. Whomever they see as their main person will get the king's share of attention. However, they are good with families and children.
Since dachshunds are so tiny, you need to introduce them to children when they are puppies. Older dogs will be a little nervous around children. Additionally, you will need to teach the children to be careful around the tiny dog.
Grooming Needs of the Weenie Dog
All your weenie dogs will need some brushing. Even the short hair dogs will shed during the summer. So unless you want to vacuum up tiny hairs, brushing your dog will be necessary.
Of course, the longer hair dogs will need more attention. They will need to be brushed daily to prevent knots and mats. If you brush your dog on a regular basis, bathing will only be required a few times a year.
Barking and More Barking
While you can teach a dachshund not to bark, it will be difficult. This is something you will need to start as a puppy and never encourage. However, if an excited bark, an alerted bark, or a friendly greeting does not bother you, then they will be perfect.
Rarely do dachshunds bark out of meanness. Although, if they are a single dog and more dogs are introduced at an older age, this may be a problem. Since the dachshund is a single person dog, they may bark to keep other dogs from hogging their person.
Breeding the Weenie Dog
As sad as it is, most dachshunds cannot give birth naturally. They have to have c-sections. Therefore, I beg you, please have your dog spayed or neutered.
All dogs require special attention and have different needs. Please read more about your dog choice and learn as much as you can before adopting. Then you can make an informed decision.
